Wat Pho (Wat Po)

This is possibly the most interesting temple in Thailand as it combines history, medical science and is a center for meditaion and traditional massage training. Its official name is Wat Phrachetuphon Vimon Mangkararam Ratchaworamahawihan, although it is commonly called Wat Po.

Founded during the 16th century, Wat Pho is most famous for the golden reclining Buddha that measues 46 metres and has feet inlaid with mother-of pearl. This is the main attraction that draws visitors to the temple. In more modern times, Wat Pho has gained international recognition as a meditation centre and for the traditional Thai massage that is both practiced and taught here.

Traditionally, temples were the schools as there was no formal education system, with monks providing basic lesson in both spiritual and secular subjects. King Rama III turned Wat Po into a major centre for learning in botany, geography and history.
Bas reliefs around one of the main buildings depict the story of the Ramakian which is the Thai adaption of the Indian Ramayana.

For those interested in traditional Thai medicine, there is a pavilion that serves to both impart knowledge and provide treatment. The walls have marble tablets describing basic anatomy and treatments. In the late afternoon, traditional medicine practitioners are there to dispense herbal mixtures. Nearby, there is a cloister where you can have a traditional Thai massage for a very small payment. Wat Phra That Chae Haeng, Nan

Wat Phrathat Chae Haeng is a sacred place of worship, situated on a mound on the eastern side of the Nan River, at the former centre of the Nan town after moving from Pua town. Wat Phra Borommathat Chae Haeng was constructed during the rule of Chao Phraya Kanmueang (the Feudal Lord of Nan during 1326 – 1359) as an enshrining venue of 7 Buddha relics, silver and golden votive tablets presented by King Maha Thammaracha Lithai on the occasion that Chao Phraya Kanmueang assisted in the construction of Wat Luang Aphai (Wat Pa Mamuang in Sukhothai Province at present) in 1354.

It features a chedi in a bell shape. The pattern of Phrathat Chae Haeng is assumed to have been influenced by the chedi of Phrathat Hariphunchai.

It is plated with Thong Changko or Thong Dok Buap – a combination of brass and copper. The staircase up to the Phrathat is in a Naga shape, while the gable above the entrance gate to the wihan is the stucco relief depicting intertwined Nagas, the unique characteristic of Nan fine art.

Phra Borommathat Chae Haeng represents the Year of the Rabbit. Lanna people believe that travelling to pay respect to the Phrathat of their Year of Birth or “Chu That” would reap them great results.

Tourists can visit the temple everyday from 6.00 a.m. – 6.00 p.m.

A quiet and tranquil province, Nan nestles in a verdant valley in northern Thailand. About 668 kilometres from Bangkok, it covers an area of 11,472 square kilometres

A uniquely designed and the most interesting temple in Nan is Wat Phumin, which has a 4-portico, single building housing both the Ubosot and Vihan. Four Buddha statues with their backs

against one another are installed in the main hall facing the four directions. The doors are delicately carved in splendid designs by Lanna craftsmen.
Wat Phumin underwent a major restoration in 1867 since it was built some 27 years ago. It is believed that the wall murals were commissioned during this time. The wall paintings, in Thai Lu style are considered highly valuable and depict legends concerning the Lord Buddha as well as local legends and the local way of life, which include native attires, weaving and commerce with foreign countries.

Leng Buai Ia Shrine, Chinese Temple

Leng Buai Ia Shrine was originally an ancient Tae Chew Shrine. Chinese businessmen in this area came to the place of worship for refuge and to improve the prosperity of their businesses. The shrine is a medium-sized building built in traditional chinese architectural style. It is central Ayutthaya period, from the main entrance of the shrine, there is a building built in the shape of a mountain in keeping with chinese tradition. The roof is made of glazed, colored tiles, two stuccoed dragons facing each other decorate the rooftop. The columns of the shrine are encircled by loop, stuccoed dragons, inside there is an altar of Leng Buai Ia and his wife in the center, that of Gong-Wu deity on the left and that of the queen of heaven on the right, to the right close to the entrance is an ancient bell built by Emperor Tao Kwong towards the end of the Ching Dynasty.

This three-hundred year old shrine also features some significant ancient objects, for example, three ancient plaques written in the reign of Emperor Kwang Si of the Ching Dynasty; a bell inscribed with the name of Choen Thai Chue, made for this shrine in particular and a container for incense sticks a royal gift from King Chulalongkorn, King Rama V.

Western Water Lilies Bred by Thai Cultivators

The Suwanna Water Lily is a hybrid of the "Khoa thammanune" and the "Blue Capenses". Water lilies of this kind have two colours in any flower and the colours of the petals alternate. There are dots on the petals, stamen and pistil, giving the flowers a different design.

The Tan Khwan Water Lily is a hybrid of the "Perris Fire Opal" and the "Sirius." bred by airatana Songpanich of the Department of Agriculture. The colour is deep pink, almost red and some have a rosy colour. The form of the flower is star-like, with layers of petals, forming 44 to 48 petal layers.

The Tanpong Water Lily is a hybrid of the "Mayla" and the "Madam Ville Frongoniere." bred by Pairatana Pongpanich of the Department of Agriculture. The flower bud tapers to the end and the top and bulges in the middle. The petal tip is pointed. The petals arewhite and red. he petal layers are especially dense with more than 45 petal layers. The flower in full bloom is large and semi-circular in shape and emits a soft fragrance.

The Mangala Ubol Water Lily is a hybrid of the "Maxicana" and the "Parries Five O." bred by Asst. Prof. Dr. Noppachai Chansilpa. The flower has dense layers of petals. It is orange yellow in colour with the ends of the petals being orange. The flower in full bloom is large and circular in shape and has a sweet fragrance. The stalk holds the flower up from the water.

Some bugs are like enemies to farmers since all they can do is destroying the farmer's production. However, there are friendly bugs whose main purpose is to eliminate the harmful bugs from eating farmer's crops. These friendly bugs consume the undesired bugs from farmer's field for survival. We realized this balance of nature and instead of using chemical substance in our farms, we learn to appreciate these friendly bugs. Some types of Caterpillars such as; Drury and wood-boxing beatle are among some of the bugs that damage our fields since they survive on the leaves of our plants from the time they were in their chrysalis stage till maturity. Duration: 3 days 2 nights

Day 1 Stop at Ban Thap Put to visit the Agrotourism Service Centre at Ban Thap Put, Amphoe Thap Put, Phang-Nga. Then visit the traditional 'chok' sugar production plant, a medicinal arden, integrated farming and southern banana plantations. In the afternoon, take a cruise along Phang-Nga Bay to capture the experiences of limestone mountains and mangrove forests. Spend the night in Phuket.

Day 2 Take a boat from Laem Hin Pier on the Phuket side to Ko Maphrao. Stop on the way to see mussels, fish and lobsters raised in netted containers. Try your hand at fishing and mussels 'stomping' Take a look at the mangrove forest. Have dinner at a food centre by the netted tanks and cruise around the island.

In the afternoon, watch the local sport activities, rubber collecting and integrated farming on the island. Phang Nga Krabi Phuket

Dubbed the Three Maidens on the Andaman Sea, the three provinces, Phang Nga, Krabi, and Phuket, nestle behind the tall limestone mountain ranges, facing the aquamarine sea and jagged bays covered with abundant mangrove forests. Off shore stand many islands. Amidst this beautiful scenery exist intriguing agrarian lifestyles and folk wisdom in the making of 'chok' sugar and medicinal gardens. Other attractions include integrated farming at Ban Thap Put, Phang-Nga, pretty houseplant gardens in Krabi, fishery and mussel raising in netted tanks at Ko Maphrao and mangrove forests touring at Ban Bang Rong in Phuket.
